Consecutive interpreting is the rendering of spoken information in the source language into the target language in oral form with a time delay. In this form of interpreting, the speaker first presents his information and pauses to allow the interpreter to translate it. This form of translation is suitable for shorter events. The translator whispers where the translation is intended only for one or two persons.

In consecutive interpreting the interpreter begins rendering the message into the target language only after the speaker completes his thought or sentence. The interpreter usually records the speaker’s words with shorthand notes. This form of interpreting is used mostly in discussions involving only a few people (e.g. visits, lunch).

Interpreting in court proceedings can be performed only by sworn interpreters with a command of both the legal system and the source and target languages.
